What You Need to Know About 3TB Drives

The Best of PCWorld

I can still remember the days when RAM was measured in kilobytes and hard drives in megabytes. So the recent release of 3TB (terabyte) PC hard drives simply boggles my mind. Let these numbers ping-pong about in your brain for a bit, to appreciate the sheer magnitude they represent: 3TB, that's 3072GB, or roughly 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. That should be enough to hold all the digital data you might ever want. As you might expect, however, installing and configuring a drive that size can present challenges. We asked storage maven Jon L. Jacobi to offer some advice for anyone considering making the 3TB jump. His article, "Everything You Need to Know About 3TB Hard Drives," outlines the issues and details the solutions. If you're tempted by terabytes, give it a read.
